The “Artistic Coffa Bag by Borbone” are the product of an accurate and meticulous study of the Sicilian Tradition and its artistic styles, reinterpreted and reshaped in a modern key. The main feature of these artifacts is the innovation and stylistic interpretation of the traditional "Coffa", formerly made with the skilful interweaving of the curine or the tender leaves of the Dwarf Palm, a native plant typical of the Mediterranean Macchia.

The Dwarf Palm

tg-01

The name of the genus Chamaerops comes from the Greek khamai (small or prostrate) and rhops (bush), referring to the contained posture of the plant. Palms are very ancient plants and their origin, dated through the fossil remains, dates back to about 145 million years ago. The oldest specimen, planted in 1585, is located in the botanical garden of Padua and is known as Goethe's palm as the German writer, fascinated by its beauty, wanted to dedicate the famous essay Metamorphosis of plants to it. It is a thermoxerophilic plant, which for its robust root system, is appreciated for counteracting erosion, desertification of soils and for its ability to regenerate even after fires. The species is included in the national and regional Red Lists, IUCN threatened status (Endangered). Furthermore, it is a food source as the more tender apical shoots of Chamaerops humilis are edible. In times of famine they were consumed boiled as a vegetable, replacing the potato and also as flour to make sweets.

Its Applications

In the past, the Dwarf Palm was used in popular daily life as a container for the forage of the Donkeys and Horses that pulled the characteristic "Sicilian Carts", or as an object closest to the figure of the woman used in the form of a "bag" for transport of first fruits and foodstuffs to and from markets or countryside. It was commonly used for the production of ornamental or commonly used objects such as brooms and ropes.

Reinterpretation of tradition and new materials

tg-01

The Brand Borbone has decided to reinterpret the tradition and the characteristic styles of Sicilianity, abandoning the use of the "Curina" and introducing the ribbon as a raw material (in silk, cotton and various fabrics), as this can be created from textile waste and recycled. Coffa, with very ancient and deep roots rooted in the culture of our land, is elevated to an elegant and prestigious fashion garment while maintaining its historical identity unaltered. It comes to life in a new light, new garments, specific to each individual specimen.
